GRAND LAKE, Colo. — After a record-setting year on the Cornell backline, senior defender Catie Smith has been named a First-Team All-American, the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association announced on Wednesday. Smith is just the fourth player in program history to earn first-team honors and the first since Sarah Averson in 2003.
This is the second straight year that Smith has been named an All-American, as she was named an IWLCA Third-Team All-American in 2016. The 2017 Ivy League Defender of the Year, Smith was named to the IWLCA All-Northeast Region First Team last week and on Tuesday was tabbed as the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Year.
Smith finished the season as the Big Red’s leading take-away defender for the third consecutive year and set a single-season caused turnover program record for the second straight year with an Ivy League-best 42. The tri-captain also led the team in ground balls (45) and draw controls (47) and became just the second player in school history to reach 100 career caused turnovers on May 5 against Harvard in the Ivy League Tournament semifinals. Smith was the backbone of a Cornell defensive unit that continually ranked in the top 10 nationally in scoring defense and never gave up more than 12 goals in a game for the first time since the 2003 season.
The Berwyn, Pa. native had at least one caused turnover in 18 of the 19 games that Cornell played this season, recording multiple caused turnovers in 13 contests. She finishes her Big Red career second all-time in caused turnovers with 105. Smith’s impressive outing against Harvard on April 29 – five caused turnovers, three ground balls and one draw control – earned her one of two Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week honors in 2017. She was also one of just three defenders named to the Tewaaraton Award top 25 and earned First-Team All-Ivy League honors as well as a nod to the 2017 Ivy League All-Tournament Team.
Smith is just the fourth Cornell player to be named a First-Team IWLCA All-American, joining Tina Hennessey ’93 (1992-93), Jaimee Reynolds ’02 (2002), and Sarah Averson ’03 (2003).
She is one of 48 Division I All-Americans named by the IWLCA committee and one of three Ivy League players selected for the first team. The IWLCA will honor the National All-Americans at the IWLCA All-American Banquet on Saturday June 3, 2017 at the Hunt Valley Inn in Hunt Valley, Md.

By the end of last week’s spring break, Conestoga senior midfielder Liz Scott was tired.
By the end of the second half of Tuesday night’s Central League showdown with Strath Haven at Teamer Field, Scott was tired of worrying about whether the defending PIAA champion Pioneers would find themselves out of first place in the Central League.
Scott won the overtime draw, took the ball to goal and scored, giving top-ranked ’Stoga (9-1, 5-0) a thrilling 9-8 victory over a much-improved Haven (8-1, 4-1) squad that has established itself as a league contender.
Conestoga had its eight-game season-opening streak stopped in the last of its three games in Georgia last week, falling to Milton High (GA).
“It was a great trip,” said the Loyola (Md.)-bound Scott, who had five goals, three draw controls, three groundballs and two caused turnovers. “We did so many off-the-field things like bungee jumping and go-karting. But by the last game, we were just so tired. We played three good teams down there, and Milton just go us.”
Strath Haven, which trailed at halftime, 6-3, did its best to get after the Pioneers in the second half, earning five draw controls and making the most of its 10 scoring chances. Maddy Ruffini and Margaret Hotham were credited with tying goals before Scott gave Conestoga an 8-7 lead with 2:30 showing on the clock. Ruffini took advantage of a ’Stoga turnover and pulled the Panthers even for the last time 1:12 before the second half ended.
“I guess we made a statement today,” Haven coach Pigeon Graham said. “That was a fun game. Now we have to get ready for Radnor Thursday. We might have been sneaking up on some teams, but I guess that won’t be the case after this game.”
Conestoga senior goalie Anne Fraschella made a key save late in the second half on a play on which it appeared Haven was going to go back ahead.
“Their girl came around the crease and there was a defender on her,” Fraschella said. “I just did everything I could to stop her.”
At the other end of the field, Strath Haven’s Katie Capalbo made a couple of big stops on scoring bids by Scottie Rose Growney.
During the five-minute break before overtime began, Scott made it a point to let her teammates know that she wasn’t going to let them lose.
“I knew we had to turn things around,” she said of the Pioneers’ disappointing play in the second half. “You play with heart and grit and you get the draw and you can win in overtime.”
Conestoga coach Amy Orcutt knew what had gone wrong after the intermission break.
“We just weren’t getting draw controls,” Orcutt said. “But it was good to see that we found a way to win this game.”
They gave up three goals and were held scoreless in the first half of the game.
Then, they lost one of their leading scorers and key possession players on draws in the first minute of the second half
The Conestoga Pioneers reacted to what could have been serious adversity and bounced back to earn a 15-8 Central League decision over visiting Harriton at Teamer Field Thursday afternoon.
Greta Stahl (four goals, two assist) scored twice and Lauren Binnion added a goal to give Harriton a 3-0 lead with 12 minutes left in the opening half. The next six goals came from the sticks of Conestoga players, with Liz Scott getting three, Scottie Rose Growney adding a pair and an assist, and Amelia Kienzle tallying 21 seconds after Scott got the first ’Stoga goal.
“We were getting the opportunities,” Conestoga coach Amy Orcutt said of the first half of the first half. “But we weren’t making the most of our shots.”
Two of the Pioneers’ goals in the first half came when they were one player up because of a Harriton yellow card. Rams goalie Devin McClain help hold her team together by making eight saves in the opening 25 minutes.
With both teams one player down early in the second half, Stahl scored again for Harriton. Conestoga’s Scott had drawn her second yellow card with 24:01 to play and spent the rest of the game on the sideline.
Katelin Williams pulled Harriton even at 6-6 in the third minute of the half, but Kienzle scored and ’Stoga went on a run that resulted in six of the next seven goals.
The last three of those goals were scored by senior Dana Cicchitti, who got one goal in the season-opening win against Notre Dame and two in Wednesday’s Central League victory at Springfield-Delco.
“Maddi Little got hurt, and then we lost Liz (Scott),” said Growney, who finished with five goals and one assist and added eight draw controls. “That wasn’t what we wanted in a game like this. We regrouped and said that someone had to step up for us.
“Dana was so clutch with what she did. She was awesome.”
When Cicchitti started her scoring spree, Conestoga had a two-goal lead. One minute and 17 seconds later, the Pioneers were up by five goals with seven minutes left in the contest.
Ceara Sweeney, Morgan Littlewood, Sydney Sloan, Lindsay Erickson and Emma McGillis chipped in with some strong defensive work for the home team.
“This was a nice team win,” said Cicchitti, who missed the end of her junior season – when Conestoga swept through the PIAA tournament to earn its first state championship – because of pneumonia.
“I guess I just turned out to be the right person in the right place in this game.”
The place Cicchitti and her teammates hope to stay is at the top of the Central League standings. They will face another big challenge Tuesday afternoon when they host Radnor in a rematch of the 2016 state final.
“I just wanted to help pick up my teammates when we needed it today,” Cicchitti said. “It was great hearing Liz yelling for us from the sidelines. We know we have to keep working and trying to get better.”
The pair shook off a disappointing first half Wednesday afternoon and helped the defending Central League and PIAA champions open league play with a 14-10 decision over host Springfield-Delco at Halderman Field.
Kienzle tallied three goals in the second half while Growney got her two goals and two of her three assists after the break as Conestoga (2-0, 1-0) rallied from a 6-3 deficit by outscoring the Cougars (1-1, 0-1) after intermission, 11-4.
With starting goalie Julianne Clemens sidelined with an injury, Springfield had to go with freshman Dana Mirigliano in goal. She gave way to Aidan Gallagher, another ninth grader, late in the second half.
The Pioneers scored the first five goals of the second half and seven of the first eight, with Growney’s first tally giving them the lead for the first time with 17:50 to play. Kienzle’s first goal came a little over a minute later.
“We’re young, and we still have a lot to learn,” Conestoga coach Amy Orcutt said. “We have talent, but it will take a while to put everything together. I’m calling plays and some of them are still looking at me and wondering what it means.
“Springfield did a nice job pressuring the ball in the first half. In the second half, we did a better job of getting the ball in their end (of the field).”
Olivia Little (three goals, one assist) and Bridget Whitaker both scored twice in the first half for Springfield, which led 3-0 before Julia Littlewood broke through for ’Stoga 13 minutes into the game.
Maddie Wood got two of her three goals and Growney scored twice and set up a Liz Scott goal as the Pioneers gained a two-goal advantage with 12 minutes left. Goalie Anne Frascella made six of her 10 saves in the second half for Conestoga.
“Our midfield transitions weren’t working in the first half,” said Kienzle, a junior who has committed to the University of Delaware. “When we took the (halftime) break, we re-energized ourselves and came out and had a better second half.
“We have to realize that we have to come out for every game thinking about how winning it can help us win another championship.”
Growney didn’t try to hide the smile on her face that told how delighted she was to be able to play again.
“I couldn’t be happier,” the University of North Carolina signee said. “I’ve played this game for so long, and it was very hard to have it taken away last year.
“Actually, not being able to play then gave me time to see the game from a different perspective. I saw how (2016 seniors) Monica (Borzillo) and Sondra (Dickey) did things. And I got really focused on working hard last summer. I wanted to get stronger and work on my stick work.”
Growney admitted that she wasn’t pleased with the first-half performance the Pioneers turned in against the Cougars.
“That wasn’t the way we wanted to start this game,” she said. “They had a freshman (Alyssa Long) face-guarding me. She’s going to North Carolina, too.
“I’m just glad we played better in the second half. Now we have to get ready to play Harriton (Thursday). And we have our game against Radnor next week.”
Scott helped ’Stoga to a 18-8 advantage in draw controls by claiming the ball on 11 draws.
“It’s so nice to be out there and see (Growney) playing again,” Scott said.
